Day 102

Two days into my freedom from the 26.2 mile run (after 100 straight 26.2 mile days) I have slept until noon two days in a row! And I have been able to spend all of my time with my family!

I am glad I ran the equivalent of 100 marathons in 100 days, but I am just as glad that I am done.

The support that I have received all along the way was truly amazing and I hope that the people that followed me and supported me stick we me for the adventures to come.

Just remember, life is what we make it.

Day 101

After much, and I mean MUCH contemplation, I have made the difficult decision to NOT go beyond 100 days with the marathon streak.

My decision is based on family values.  Here is what I was thinking after the completion of yesterday's run as well as many of the runs that I have completed over the past month or so...

"The equivalent of 100 marathons in 100 days is completed!  I am giving very serious consideration to staying at the nice round number since I personally do not know anyone in the U.S. who has done it previously and I am paying the greatest price for this... time, which I do not get back.  I have no time for my children.  And that is wrong.  I can be on the treadmill at home with them, but six hours a day is a big price to pay.  I cannot play football with my 12 year old, or even chase my 8 year old around the park, because when I am not running, my legs are shot.  My daughter is growing up way too fast and my oldest and I can run marathons anytime we want the rest of our lives together.  When I can recover like normal people do.  I have too many other books that have already been written and need to be published, even if only by me.  They are still my legacy.  We will see what tomorrow brings, but I have already put countless hours into thinking about this and what I am trying to accomplish.
In the end, all I want to do is make a difference in the lives of others, one person at a time.  And that I can continue to do."

My  plan now is to keep my run streak alive as thousands of others have done before me.  The only rule as I understand it is to run at least a mile per day.  I did just that this morning.  Obviously, I could run much, much further, but I want and need to get my legs back.  When  I get up each day it is very difficult to just walk.  So I imagine the next month or so will be a recovery phase.  Based on past experience I will feel normal again in a month or so.

I am incredibly grateful to all of you who have stayed with me, cheered me on and supported me through all the ups and downs.  For me this is not the end, rather, just the beginning.  I hope that you stay with me for the long haul.

100th MARATHONS in 100 DAYS completed

MILE 1 - 6 AM start time. 61 degrees right now with a high of 82. Perfect morning for a run...

MILE 2 - I have the good fortune of having a running partner for the whole 26.2 miles...

MILE 3 - Eric found me on Dailymile a few months back and has joined me on quite a few of these runs...

MILE 4 - We found a short trail along a creek to provide some great scenery, one deer and a lot of mosquitoes!...

MILE 5 - The humidity is already coming up...

MILE 6 - Heading down to the river...

MILE 7 - We are keeping a comfortable 12 minute mile average pace...

MILE 8 - My left heal is a little sore today, but everything else is good...

MILE 9 - Don't you just love running your 100th marathon in 100 days? (my daughter Jessica told me to include that question in today's post!)...

MILE 10 - One thing I can say after running 26.2 miles 100 days in a row is that it does not get easier!...

MILE 11 through 13 - The humidity is making a big difference today. In the last week, the temperature has been in the 90's with extremely high humidity. For that reason, I have logged a lot of miles on the treadmill. Today has reminded me why I have done that...

MILE 14 - The other major reason that has influenced me logging miles on the treadmill is that it has allowed me to be with my kids much more...

MILE 15 - That has been a major struggle for me, between working late, usually not getting home until around 10 PM, then spending another six hours a day running does not give me much priceless time with my kids. Time that I will never get back...

MILE 16 - Eric got at least a half marathon in until he started having stomach problems. He went farther than his body wanted to go and he kept me company for a huge part of today's marathon...

MILE 17 - I have decided to finish today's marathon on the treadmill...

MILES 18 and 19 - Watching a movie with my daughter...

MILE 20 - My feet are still extremely tender after all this time...

MILE 21 - The treadmill is helping with that a little though...

MILE 22 - If I stayed on the street, I would have been done by now...

MILE 23 - But at least on the treadmill, I am close to the food...

MILE 24 - That and the fact that I am not in a hurry...

MILE 25 - Almost there...

MILE 26 - It only took a little over five and a half hours of running time, but number 100 is almost complete...

The equivalent of 100 marathons in 100 days is completed!
And that I can continue to do.

I have completed the equivalent of a full marathon seven days a week, whether I felt like it or not, as a platform for a book that I spent 9 years working on.

The message of the book is that we can do pretty much anything ONE DAY AT A TIME.  The book is not about running, it is about improving.  It is about getting better at anything we want to improve at by making small incremental improvements that make the difficult things not only achievable, but relatively easy.

This book was written for anyone who desires to get motivated and more importantly discover how easy it can be to STAY motivated.

Anyone can get motivated, very few can stay motivated.  I am giving this book the epic platform that it deserves because I believe that staying motivating is the bridge between dreams and reality.

99th marathon in 99 days completed

Mile 1 - 70 degrees and sunshine with a high of 79 today...

Mile 2 - Right now there is a light breeze that hopefully keeps the bugs in check...

Mile 3 - Today's 26.2 miles will be broken up between taking the kids where they need to go and of course work, finishing up whatever miles remain between 10 PM and midnight...

Mile 4 - Since I have to break it up and it is nice out, I am mixing in street running and treadmill...

Mile 5 - It also helps me break it up mentally, which I believe is a big part of what makes this even possible...

Miles 6 and 7 - The treadmill has allowed me to spend more time with the kids...

Mile 8 - And for me, nothing is more important than that...

Mile 9 - It is my dream after all, to have a career as an author...

Mile 10 - Working on my books during the school year...

Mile 11 - Spending the rest of my time with the kids. Traveling, exploring, learning and living...

Mile 12 - Life is a gift, and I don't plan on waisting it...

Mile 13 - And each day a gift in itself...

Mile 14 - This gift of a day just happens to include 26.2 miles of running (for the 99th day in a row)...

Mile 15 - If I can make it through today's 26.2 miles I get the privilege of completing day 100 tomorrow...

Mile 16 - In the meantime, soon I will be off to work...

Mile 17 - Just a few more miles before work...

Mile 18 - Today seems to be flying by...

Mile 19 - That is the one thing I have going for me on this adventure, time flies...

Mile 20 - Time to go to work...

Mile 21 - Right after this mile, I have exactly 5.2 miles left for after work...

Mile 22 - 10:30 PM Just got back from work, switched shoes and beginning final leg of today's run...

Mile 23 - 68 degrees under clear skies with a light breeze...

Mile 24 - My son Kahlen is running ahead with our yellow lab...

Mile 25 - And my daughter Jessica is by my side on the mountain bike...

Mile 26 - Not often in a person's lifetime can a they enjoy running their 26th mile of their 99th marathon in 99 days!

The equivalent of 99 marathons in 99 days is complete (Just after 11:30 PM)

98th marathon in 98 days completed

Mile 1 - Thanks to my wonderful daughter waking me up earlier than normal today I am getting started much earlier than I have lately (sacrificing her own ability to sleep in when school is out just to help me!)...

Mile 2 - Another day on the treadmill...

Mile 3 - Outside it is way too hot...

Mile 4 - Especially considering that I am doing this again tomorrow...

Mile 5 - One day at a time...

Mile 6 - My feet are definitely adjusting to the mileage...

Mile 7 - The challenge has become purely mental...

Mile 8 - It has become more of a one mile at a time kind of thing...

Mile 9 - Only 18 miles to go!...

Mile 10 - Watching movies with my daughter again today until I go to work...

Mile 11 - Plugging away...

Mile 12 - Took my youngest son somewhere and it is extremely hot outside!...

Mile 13 - Running 26.2 outside today would be nuts!...

Mile 14 - Re-starting a run is always a little difficult...

Mile 15 - But breaking it up, even if only for a half hour helps...

Mile 16 - On another note, I do not recommend eating a lot of black beans in the beginning of a 26.2 mile run...

Mile 17 - I'm sticking with raw almonds and black coffee...

Mile 18 - and spinach of course...

Mile 19 - And a lot of water...

Mile 20 - The two most common questions I get are how do I do this? and what do I eat?...

Mile 21 - The only answer I have for the second question is one mile at a time, one day at a time...

Mile 22 - But it is still extremely difficult...

Mile 23 - I can barely walk when I first get up in the morning...

Mile 24 - It is times like that when I really begin to have doubts about why I am doing this...

Mile 25 - Once I get running, the challenge becomes mental...

Mile 26 - After completing three movies and 23.7 miles on the treadmill, I decided to run the last 2.5 miles outside and it is not only incredibly got, it is insanely humid out here! Staying inside for the majority of tge rub was the right decision. Plus I got to hang out with the kids. Because once I finish this run, I hit the shower and Kahlen and I are off to work abd won't get back until after 10 PM.

The equivalent of 98 marathons in 98 days is completed and thanks to Jessica getting me up extra early, I do not have to run after work for a change!

97th marathon in 97 days completed

Mile 1 - Another hot one - high today of 93...

Mile 2 - Translation - treadmill...

Mile 3 - I hope to have a few less miles to run after work than yesterday...

Mile 4 - In the meantime, movies with the kids...

Mile 5 - In the air conditioned living room!...

Mile 6 - It's coincidental
that the temps are mimicking my number of marathons...

Mile 7 - Hopefully Friday is not 100 degrees...

Mile 8 - In the meantime I stay inside...

Mile 9 - And knock out the miles...

Mile 10 - Whatever running is left for after work I will probably do outside...

Mile 11 - The treadmill is easier physically, but mental torture...

Mile 12 - The movies help, but to keep going, is the mental battle...

Mile 13 - Just like yesterday, every mile I run now I do not have to run at night...

Mile 14 - Another mile...

Mile 15 - I will be heading off to work soon...

Mile 16 - A few more treadmill miles to go...

Mile 17 - Not a day goes by without me questioning what it is that I am doing...

Mile 18 - Eight point two miles to go...

Mile 19 - Completed one more mile on the mill, leaving 7.2 miles for after work...

Mile 20 - 10:15 PM - Back on the treadmill - almost 90 degrees still outside...

Mile 21 - Beginning to have some serious reservations of this project. I wake up and start my run usually getting in 18 to 19 miles before literally jumping in the shower then flying off to work. Only to roll in around 10 PM, then run until I complete 26.2 miles just before midnight. Then attempt to go to sleep by 2 AM which is not always easy because of the mileage...

Mile 22 - I have a lot of things that keep me going, but that only takes me so far...

Mile 23 - Momentum is all that carries me at this point...

Mile 24 - OK, not ALL that carries me, it is the feedback I get as well. It is like having running partners, except, a lot of them...

Mile 25 - I stopped running for myself a long time ago...

Mile 26 - Today's 26.2 miles is almost complete - and I am tired!...

The equivalent of 97 marathons in 97 days is completed (with less than 10 minutes to spare!!!)

96th marathon in 96 days completed

Mile 1 - High of 93 today with triple digit heat index...

Mile 2 - Another day on the treadmill...

Mile 3 - Knocking out as many of these 26.2 miles as I can before going to work this afternoon...

Mile 4 - Then I will finish the remaining miles between 10 PM and midnight...

Mile 5 - And if the weather cooperates, I can finish outside...

Mile 6 - Kahlen can get a few miles in with me as a recovery run from his 26.2 miles on Saturday...

Mile 7 - Four days until marathon number one hundred...

Mile 8 - Hopefully there is not a triple digit heat index on Friday!...

Mile 9 - Because Marathon number 100 should be run outside!...

Mile 10 - My body is holding up good today...

Mile 11 - And hanging out with the kids makes the mental part a breeze...

Mile 12 - Working evenings is not so bad in the summertime...

Mile 13 - I get to spend my mornings with the kids...

Mile 14 - Even if I am on a treadmill...

Mile 15 - As crazy as spending five hours and forty minutes on a treadmill or on the street, it beats spending that much time on a couch!...

Mile 16 - And the time will pass anyway...

Mile 17 - Which is good because it is almost time for me to be off to work..

Mile 18 - Eight miles left to run after work - I will need to start by 10 PM to finish easily before midnight...

Mile 19 - 9:50 PM running outside with Kahlen and Eric for 8.2 miles...

Mile 20 - It is still 88 degrees out here!...

Mile 21 - This feels like a mid-summer night run...

Mile 22 - We are holding a comfortable eleven and a half minute mile average pace...

Mile 23 - I imagine we will gradually slow up a little as the miles build up...

Mile 24 - Aside from almost tripping over a speed bump I feel great right now...

Mile 25 - Almost there...

Mile 26 - Another very enjoyable run - I consider myself very lucky to have the friends and family supporting me with this adventure...

The equivalent of 96 marathons in 96 days is completed! (with almost a half an hour to spare!)

95th marathon in 95 days completed

Mile 1 - Happy Father's Day to all the fathers. Since it is father's day, I am running all 26.2 miles today at home on the treadmill in the living room with my family, where I belong on a day like today...

Mile 2 - It is a good thing that I have a family that loves watching movies...

Mile 3 - Today we are watching a classic, "Short Circuit"...

Mile 4 - We finished the final mile quite fast so I was worried how my feet would feel today...

Mile 5 - The treadmill is helping with the recovery...

Mile 6 - It also helps me condition to my pace - The light and easy thirteen minute mile...

Mile 7 - Aside from making the running more enjoyable, this pace has allowed me to finish every marathon event strong...

Mile 8 - It is one thing to run everyday, the idea is to enjoy it...

Mile 9 - That should be the point of just about anything we do...

Mile 10 - The best part about running Grandma's Marathon with my son yesterday was that we both kept the same light an easy pace and had fun the whole way!...

Mile 11 - Not to mention, Kahlen just started running in the first week of May...

Mile 12 - He trained almost every day for about five weeks...

Mile 13 - A very short time, but he ran with me, at my slow pace and was able to increase his distance significantly...

Mile 14 - I have looked forward to running places like Chicago, New York and San Francisco to name a few...

Mile 15 - Now I am looking forward to eventually running those places that much more...

Mile 16 - Now it will be us running those places...

Mile 17 - Now, we have just got to figure out which marathon we can run next...

Mile 18 - One at a time we will eventually run a lot of them...

Mile 19 - In the meantime, I will enjoy today's run...

Mile 20 - And I am almost done already...

Mile 21 - My feet are still holding up good today...

Mile 22 - The treadmill is better for the feet and the movies and company help with the mental part...

Mile 23 - With the high heat of the next few days, and the kids out of school, the treadmill is gonna get a little more use than normal...

Mile 24 - At least I have my supplies closer to me...

Mile 25 - Not to mention a lot closer to a bathroom!...

Mile 26 - Another 26.2 miles almost completed, my left heal is still a little tender, but better than I thought it would feel today...

94th marathon in 94 days completed

Mile 1 - Running Grandma's marathon in Duluth, MN - Starting in Two Harbors...

Mile 2 - 64 degrees and sunny (here) with a high of 63 in Duluth...

Mile 3 - My twenty year old son, Kahlen, who just started running last month, is running by my side...

Mile 4 - The farthest he has ever run before today is 16.8 miles!...

Mile 5 - My daughter Jessica is waiting for us at the finish line...

Mile 6 - She was willing to wait there for nine hours since we had to get there early to catch shuttle buses to the start line!...

Mile 7 - Blog app froze up at mile 6 so I am just keeping my updates on a notepad app and updating when I an able to...

Mile 8 - It was announced earlier that this event has over six thousand volunteers!!!...

Mile 9 - My legs are feeling the effects of yesterday's two hundred plus mile drive. More soreness than I am used to...

Mile 10 - Still no signal for the blog, just storing my notes

Mile 11 - I turned my runmeter app off a while back to save battery life....

Mile 12 - So I can take photos and notes right to the end of today's 26.2 miles...

Mile 13 - It has completely clouded over and the air off the lake is nice and cold!...

Mile 14 - The leg soreness is beginning to go away!...

Mile 15 - We have been able to maintain the same exact comfortable pace the whole way so far...

Mile 16 - Kahlen is still looking real solid...

Mile 17 - Smooth sailing here on in, we still have a nice cool breeze at our back!...

Mile 18 -As slow and easy as we are going, these miles seem to be flying by!...

Mile 19 - All these volunteers that come out to support these runners are exceptional people...

Mile 20 - Along time ago I heard about a "wall" at mile twenty - The only wall I experienced was a wall on the side of the road with some beer cups on it and some great people handing them out to those who asked!...

Mile 21 - So far three people have been kind enough to give me a beer - sometimes the one they were drinking!...

Mile 22 - I am finding that the closer I get to the finish line, the easier it gets to find beer!...

Mile 23 - Four miles to go!...

Mile 24 - This is truly the easy part!...

Mile 25 - The closer we get to the finish, the easier this getting!...

Mile 26 - This has been by far the easiest marathon to date. The wind has been at my back the whole way and my son by my side...

92nd marathon in 92 days completed

Mile 1 - 70 degrees, windy and humid. Today's high is 88 degrees!...

Mile 2 - And it looks like there is a whole lot of rain just north of us!...

Mile 3 - I am feeling a little sluggish today...

Mile 4 - At least there is a good breeze...

Mile 5 - Which is good because it is incredibly muggy out here today!...

Mile 6 - The sky to the north is getting very dark...

Mile 7 - Heading down to the river where maybe it is a little cooler...

Mile 8 - The forecast for Grandma's Marathon in Duluth is looking rough!...

Miles 9 & 10 - Heading back to the south...

Mile 11 - Going back to the house to spend some time with my kids before I head out for work...

Mile 12 - To quote my own children - Today is too short!...

Mile 13 - They like that better than "Life is too short!"...

Mile 14 - Our "Life" is "Today" after all!..

Mile 15 - My feet are holding up pretty good again today...

Mile 16 - Still a little tender, but nothing compared to a month ago...

Mile 17 - I should be able to get a few more miles in before heading off to work...

Mile 18 - One mile at a time at this point....

Mile 19 - Every mile I finish now is a mile I do not have to run at 10 PM....

Mile 20 - Change of plans. I checked the radar before going to work, major storms...

Mile 21 - Finishing the run...

Mile 22 - At least I will not be running past eleven tonight!...

Mile 23 - Coming inside earlier was a good move - it is incredibly hot outside...

Miles 24 & 25 - One more marathon to run, then I get to finally run Grandma's Marathon in Duluth...

Mile 26 - Today's final mile is here!...

93rd marathon in 93 days completed

Mile 1 - 70 degrees and mostly cloudy this morning. Today's high is near 90 again today...

Mile 2 - Every mile that I complete brings me that much closer to my Duluth road trip!...

Mile 3 - For tomorrow's running of Grandma's Marathon...

Mile 4 - My two oldest kids are making the drive with me...

Mile 5 - We we're going to take the whole family and camp, but major storms are in the forecast...

Mile 6 - So just those willing to camp in the rain are going!...

Mile 7 - Sounds like an adventure to me...

Miles 8 and 9 - I received a phone call from a wonderful reporter in Duluth about doing an interview before tomorrow's marathon, so I called my son and had him pick me up, we through everything in the van including my daughter, who insisted she cone along (that's my girl!) and we then drove over two hundred miles to Duluth...

Mile 10 - On Skyline Blvd overlooking Duluth Harbor. Just got to do my first TV interview and I feel like it went great...

Mile 11 - Picked up tomorrow's race packet in Canal Park after the interview, and now I am about twelve miles south west of town at Buffalo Valley Campground starting the rest of today's run...

Mile 12 - It is close to 80 degrees and humid, so chose a route along a highway because it takes me to a convenience store (fluids)...

Mile 13 - The kids are setting up camp while I head west and finish up today's 26.2 miles!...

Mile 14 - There are some serious rolling hills out this way...

Mile 15 - The hardest part of today's run was the four hours of driving. My legs did not like that...

Mile 16 - I do live the spontaneity of the day though!...

Mile 17 - It is now just after six in the evening, as the sun continues west, the temperature should start to improve...

Mile 18 - Because it is still hot up in the hill!...

Mile 19 - Heading back to the east...

Mile 20 - These rolling hills between HWY 35 and Cloquet will make tomorrow's flat route seem easy!...

Mile 21 - It seems like every time I look up I am going up another hill...

Mile 22 - At least the temperature is beginning to come down a little...

Mile 23 - It is now less than twelve hours from the start of Grandma's Marathon and I still have a few miles to go to finish up today's 26.2 miles!...

Mile 24 - With the sun dropping I am running in the shade of the trees along the road and what a difference it is making...

Mile 25 - Almost there!...

Mile 26 - I even found a nice paved state bike trail to finish off the last two miles!...

91st marathon in 91 days completed

Mile 1 - 57 degrees and mostly cloudy with a high today of 77...

Mile 2 - Not nearly as windy as yesterday, as a matter of fact, there is a nice light breeze right now...

Mile 3 - The sun has been making an appearance, but looking at the heavy blanket of clouds to the west, it won't be for long...

Mile 4 - Heading down to the river...

Mile 5 - I will be running Grandma's Marathon in Duluth, MN on Saturday...

Mile 6 - I have been waiting a long time to run this one!...

Mile 7 - I am really hoping the weather cooperates!...

Mile 8 - Feet are feeling a little tender again today...

Mile 9 - It is something that I am just getting used to...

Mile 10 - As much as my feet hurt, I still believe that this challenge is more mental than physical...

Mile 11 - Just don't tell my feet that!...

Mile 12 - There is not a day that goes by without me questioning what I am doing...

Mile 13 - The greatest struggle that I have is the time commitment...

Mile 14 - The time away from family is my values conflict...

Mile 15 - That is why I have mixed in the treadmill from time to time...

Mile 16 - As much as I despise the monotony of a treadmill, it is a small price to pay to be able to hang out with the kids and watch movies before going to work...

Mile 17 - Just like everyone else, it is about discovering a balance...

Mile 18 - The one thing that we all must remember is that today is all we ever have...

Mile 19 - And once it is gone, we never get it back...

90th marathon in 90 days completed

Mile 1 - 59 degrees and sunshine. Perfect running weather...

Mile 2 - I finished yesterday's 26.2 miles after eleven last night, and today will be another one of those days...

Mile 3 - 26.2 miles piece by piece...

Mile 4 - It almost feels chilly out here!...

Mile 5 - There is a very strong wind out of the north right now...

Mile 6 - So I am running straight into it!...

Mile 7 - So I can have it at my back later in the run...

Mile 8 - I do not know why, but instead of taking the marsh trails to the north, I took the sidewalk on the four lane highway...

Mile 9 - At least the traffic is not too heavy...

Mile 10 - I will be taking the trails through the marsh when I head back to the south...

Mile 11 - But first I will head to the west, away from the highway...

Mile 12 - Heading through the beautiful industrial park to get to the marsh...

Mile 13 - My feet are feeling tender too early in the run!...

Mile 14 - Finally made it to the marsh...

Mile 15 - And the wind is at my back!...

Mile 16 - Quiet, tree-lined residential streets for the next few miles...

Mile 17 - Running into the strong wind for the better part of the first ten miles has taken it's toll, I am feeling it now...

Mile 18 - I feel like I have already ran 26.2 miles!...

Mile 19 - This will be my final mile until after work (around 10 p.m.) when I will finish up the 26.2 miles for the day...

Mile 20 - 10:07 p.m. Back on the street...

Mile 21 - Got home from work, switched shoes and out the door...

Mile 22 - Considering the streak that is on the line I am cutting it a little close tonight...

Mile 23 - My son is out with me again keeping me company for these last seven miles...

Mile 24 - Just like yesterday, the night air is amazing...

Mile 25 - No traffic, just us, our yellow lab and the crickets...

Mile 26 - Starting my 26th mile at 11:23 p.m. - Plenty of time! (Listening to "Shout" by Tears for Fears - without headphones of course.)
